Day Two May 2017 IUPUI Design Team

We delivered food to Nomalungelo and Nothando's homesteads today. Unfortunately Nothando had run an errand for her family but Nomalungelo and her 7 sibings were home. We played Play-Ha (duck duck goose) with the little ones and Hide and Seek with the big ones. The grandmother was laughing her head off when our community leader Nomfundo - who is 8 months pregnant - was trying to squeeze into a tiny spot that a 4 year old created for her. It was a fun morning!
We then traveled to our New Hope Children's Centre, which is also going to be our project site for the week. The team from IUPUI has committed to building a tire pyramid playground there. Today we spent hours organizing the tires and cutting the side walls out of 60 of them. Tomorrow we will bolt the tires together and fill them with dirt as we stack them into a pyramid shape. Easier said than done and I am hoping the rain stops. The road to the school is becoming very difficult to travel on as the clay soil is turning into wet quick sand. The car slips and sides up and down the mountain.
On the way home from Malindza, we stopped by our Sanitation Across Swaziland program leader Beish's house to pick up the used soaps that were collected from our partnering hotels. This week we will be sanitizing and repackaging them so that they can be given to our rural children to prevent the spread of preventable infectious disease.
